This ornate temple tucked away in the hills near Sun Moon Lake was completed
only a few years ago. By the look of the cracks in the pillars, the entire
roof may have to be replaced, and perhaps the entire building. |
The ceramic-decorated dragon below was one of five on the roof of
an outdoor oven. (Many temples have these elaborate oven/towers where mourners
burn paper money for the dead.) As you can see in the photos this tower
was completely destroyed, snapping off at the hollow space where the oven
sat. |
We wandered
into this temple compound the morning after the quake. It was open
and swept clean, but totally empty. We felt that in light of the fury of
the quake a...well...respectful attitude towards the deities represented
inside was in order. |
